- Purpose: This paper utilises social capital theory and the extant literature on international assignments in multinational enterprises (MNEs) in arguing that there is a need to include higher education in the research agenda on international assignments. Many higher education institutes now have internationalisation strategies and consequently there is strong utilisation of different types of international assignments. We propose a research agenda which builds on the broader extant literature, and which should in the future encompass both empirical and theoretical contributions. Design/methodology/approach: This is a conceptual paper which proposes a future research agenda which should encompass both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Findings: As this is a conceptual paper, there are no empirical results. However, the main findings are the proposal of a future research agenda based around a number of key themes. Research implications: A number of key research themes and specific research questions are suggested for future researchers surrounding international assignments and employment in higher education institutions. Originality/value: While the field of expatriation/international assignments has a long pedigree, higher education has been a field bereft of research.
